Whippet is a medium sized dog from England. They are direct descendants of the English Greyhound. They can achieve top speeds of 56kmph. Temperament wise, they are friendly, gentle and affectionate. Being good with kids, they can be amazing family pets. They can live healthily up to 15 years. Males stand up to 56 cm at the withers. Whippets do not weigh more than 14 kg. ‘Easy to have’ dog
Whippets are so charming and so easy to have. Once you are a whippet owner, you will always be one. They don’t give a lot of weight or size to deal with. They weight a lot less than an average goat. Most of them in the race are around 21” tall. They come in a range of colors. You can choose it anyway you like. From pure white to pure black to any color in between, you got it. They got variations in the form of pigmentation even within the same color. Their body shape gives away the authenticity of the breed.
Relatively unknown to the masses
These endearing dogs warm up to you. Once socialized, they are pretty good with strangers too. That’s one reason they are not a very good watch dog at times. These dogs are for shows and companionships. Agility is their forte and they thrive in such environments. Most people are not aware of the breed. Their popularity ranking is not very impressive. Even amongst people who know about the breed, there are not many who know how wonderful they are. These naturally civilized and superior breed is amongst the underrated and under hyped.
Breed with elegance and class
The puppyhood is where they create most trouble. It’s equal to having a ferret at home. Add a bit squirrels too cause whippets climbs by jumping. They run a lot and chew up everything. Once you pass that phase, they are very easy to handle. Firm yet gentle hands will be required during initial training. It’s an elegant breed offering a show of class. Calling them fine British dogs would be an understatement. All they need is a place on the couch and few minutes of intense running. They are laid back otherwise and pretty cuddly too.
The Whippet cannot stand extreme cold. Its short coat does not give the dog enough protection. It is advisable to put on a warm dog sweater or get them a warm dog heating pad during cold season outings. This dog breed hates hard surfaces. When they are not chasing 35 mph speeds, they lay back on couches. Be prepared to tolerate their couch potato persona because they rest more hours than being active.
